Pegasus2 R4 Promise Utility For Mac Rebuild Raid

The Promise Utility will advise you which HDD module failed and you need to make a note of that Bay slot number before turning the system off. Follow these instructions

Unfortunately, the option to force the drives online isn't available through the Promise Utility GUI but has to be done via the Terminal application. See below for instructions on forcing the drives back online. On the Mac, open the Terminal app and run: promiseutil. This will open the Promise Utility. Now type the following: phydrv -a online -p 1. How to Rebuild a failed HDD in Disk Array. FYI, I am having the same set of problems since going to Catalina on my Mac Pro trashcan and Promise Utility v 4.04.0000.40 (C6) and P2 R8 firmware 5.04.0000.64. OS seems to hang on filesystem access to the array and never comes back until power-cycling the array.

My recent purchase of the Pegasus2 R4 disc-less drive has been a mixed experience. The drive is certainly well made and has worked correctly and quietly from the start. However, the utility software that is required to set up a Raid or otherwise monitor/modify the external drives has never functioned. Promise Pegasus R4i delivers the powerful RAID engine from the Pegasus as an internal four-bay RAID MPX Module for Mac Pro. Get the blazing speeds essential for your high-resolution video and rich media projects, along with the safety and security of a full-featured hardware RAID engine.

Prior to beginning the steps please make sure you are using the latest Promise Utility. You can download the Promise Utilty here.

Go ahead and Open the Promise Utility

Soon as you open the Promise Utility it will scream something is wrong. Note**If you see this informational message below, we advise to not accept and then shut down the Mac Pro 2019, finally, reseat the Promise R4i hard drives. There could be a slight chance that the drive did not detect on boot. Reseating and rebooting your Mac Pro will sometimes correct these problem. However; if this screen pops up again, please accept continue with the steps as there could be a dead drive.

Once you've accepted you will notice in the home page dashboard, under the label 'system status', the disk array and logical drive have an 'red circle' on each of them. If you look under the label 'storage overview' you can see that there are 3 drives listed. In the label 'Event Information' you will notice the Logical drive has been set to critical due to the missing drive.

We will confirm the drive is dead by checking the other settings.

Under the Physical Drive Icon you will notice that a Physical Drive is missing from the list.

In this image we are looking at the Disk Array information. Notice the operational status as Degraded.

In this image is the logical drive. The operational status is 'critical' which means that the volume is usuable, but if another drive fails than it will be catastrophic.

Now we've identified that the drive is indeed failed.

Go to the icon --> Disk Array --> highlight select disk array --> than to the far right there are three dots to extend the options. Click on the rebuild and proceed to accept.

Once the rebuild has begun you can monitor the rebuild in the daskboard.

3Please note** If the rebuild does not appear or fails, contact support immediately. Support contact information -> https://support.promise.com/, or call 408 228 1400 option 4

Larry,

Promise Pegasus R4 Software

I wanted you to know about a problem that I have discovered after installing Mac OS Catalina on my iMac Pro. I have a Promise Pegasus 3 R6 that I have kept fully up to date with both firmware and software updates as they became available from Promise.

Under Mac OS Mojave I had no problems booting into Windows 10 using the Option Key on startup to bring up the Storage Manager and selecting Windows. After installing Catalina, I am unable to boot into Windows 10 via this method. The boot into Windows 10 hangs at the Windows logo and the spinning circle of white dots. If I detach the Pegasus 3 from my iMac, I can use this method to boot into Windows 10 with no problems. Furthermore, I can attach the Pegasus 3 to my iMac Pro after booting into Windows 10 and it works fine in Windows (using Mac Drive)

In Mac OS Catalina I find that the Promise Utility does not operate completely correctly, i.e. failing to save a Subsystem Service Report after clicking on Save, and I find that after rebooting into OS Catalina, the Pegasus 3 runs for about 3-5 minutes each time apparently doing some sort of maintenance operation. However, in Catalina I am able to use the Pegasus 3 without any problems. I have contacted Promise Support and they acknowledge that the Pegasus 3 is not supported in Catalina and no time frame for issuing new firmware that will enable the Pegasus systems to work with Catalina is known.

Since many individuals on Macs use the Promise Pegasus raid 5 systems for editing, I thought you might wish to caution your readers about updating to Catalina until Promise issues new firmware and software that will support the Pegasus systems in Catalina.

Thank you.

Larry adds: Tom, thanks for letting us know. This is another example reinforcing caution when upgrading.
