Overview

10.2.3

When Apple replaced its movie-editing software Final Cut 7 with Final Cut Pro X, the pros were outraged.
The all new, cheaper, more amateur-friendly version was missing some beloved features of its predecessor. Even Conan O’Brien mocked Pro X.
Apple has heard the yowls from studios and reintroduced Final Cut 7, but it can only be purchased through Apple telesales (unless you find a store with an old copy on the shelf), and it’s at the original price of $1,000. The deal is for a limited and unspecified time.
Most of the missing features will matter more to professionals than the casual user. David Pogue has outlined them in detail (with workarounds for many of the issues) in his column.
One possible exception: it is impossible to import work from Final Cut 7 to Final Cut X. That means partially finished Final Cut 7 projects must be completed in 7. That also means many pro editors will have to keep both products on their computers for some time to come.
It’s a pattern we’ve seen before. When Apple reworked iMovie in 2008, it came out with a version that was supposed to simpler — and it was, by virtue of removing several features. The newer version was met with wailing and the rending of clothes. Apple slowly restored many earlier features in the intervening years.
It appears to have done something similar with Final Cut. The newer version costs $300 (plus another $50 each to add Motion and Compressor), and is much easier to use than the earlier professional version.
That was of little comfort to a producer in the middle of assembling a film if he needed to bring in more editors and add more workstations — don’t forget, the new version won’t work with film begun on the old system.
It’s for those producers that Apple said it has reintroduced Final Cut 7.
For the rest of us, especially the video dabblers, it makes more sense to get used to Final Cut Pro X, which more than serves most amateur needs.
Or there’s always Adobe Premier Elements.

Hi Folks!
Is there any problems with installing FCP 7 (disks) on iMac (Maverick) machine? Does FCP 7 run okay on Maverick? Anything I should be aware of when installing or working with FCP 7?
Thanks!
Jake
You cannot install FCP7 on MavRick. This is because the installer uses Power PC code. MavRick refuses to emulate PowerPC code. You may ask 'But Final Cut Pro 7 is an Intel program why does the installer run off of Power PC code?' The answer to that is 'Apple is extremely silly and they were most likely high on drugs when building the installer'. So you'll need to migrate FCP7 from an older drive. Then it will run fine in Apple MavRick.
I'm truly amazed that someone hasn't remade the FCS installer to be compatible with Intel like they rewrote the MavRick installer to install on a 2006 Mac Pro. Someone needs to step up to the plate and do this. There are a lot of people who still love FCP7.
I just upgraded my 27' iMac from Mt. Lion (10.8.5) to Maverick (10.9.1). I was already running FCP 7 and was concerned that I might have a problem running FCP 7 after the upgrade. So before doing it, I cloned my Mt. Lion OS to an external drive as a backup. As it turned out, FCP 7 is running fine on Maverick. However, I've been told that would not have been the case had I installed FCP 7 on a non-upgraded, freshly installed Maverick machine.
Hope this helps.
Phil
Thanks Guys! Appreciate it!
Is there any link or tutorial that you are aware of that shows how to 'migrate FCP7 from a different drive.'?

Hi All
I keep seeing this reported here and on other forums- feel prompted to shout ;)
not been my experience, I've been happily installing FCP 7 on all my macs, running 10.9 and 10.8, in fact just did an install on a MacMini running 10.9.2 - it was a 3min job- perhaps I'm living in a a weird parallel universe where things work (for once) ;)
happy to outline my routine if anyone is interested,
Graeme
Hi Graeme,
Would love to hear your routine.
Thanks,
--ken
Hi Ken,
my routine - well when i get up i have a good stretch and then make coffee..;)
hope your well!,
will write it up in the next hour or so just have a job to finish
G
Hi Graeme,
You have a stretch and coffee, I'll have breakfast and coffee.
Will check back later.

Yes, Ken & Graeme, coffee and breakfast always help.
Just upgraded to 10.9.2. & FCP 7 is running fine.

Hi all
First of all the where I'm installing from
a long time ago i made disk images of Final Cut Studio save so much time, you can do a full clean install in about 30 mins or much less if your not installing all the Applications & the extra media content.
So the Source is Final Cut Studio 3 (FCP7) as disk images.
Installing on a Mac running Mavericks 10.9.2 or earlier, with all the new generation of Studio apps, Motion 5.1, Compressor 4.1.1 and Final Cut Pro 10.1.1.
I also have QT 7.6.6 installed
1.First I make up a temporary folder in my Applications folder- call it 'FCSX' for augments sake.
2 Put Motion 5.1, Compressor 4.1.1 and Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 into this folder
3. Mount the first FCS3 Installer disk image 'Final Cut Studio install'
4. Open the Installer. (the installer will prompt you to click 'ok' to a dialogue box to quit and reopen the installer (assume this is selecting the intel installer)
5. Choose from the Installer selection 'Final Cut Pro 7' Only desert all other options.
This will install FCP7.0, Compressor 3.5 and Apple Qmaster 3.5 (and Qmaster related apps & system preference pane)
6. click install, this takes about 1min.
7. before opening anything, i then open Digital Rebellion's 'FCP Remover' App free from their website.
8. in FCP Remover i select the following, Compressor (not Compressor 4) and Qmaster. since i have Compressor 4.1.1 and its built in Qmaster which i prefer. and click remove. Then you are prompted to restart.
If you don't have a more modern version of Compressor and like to use the send to compressor command from FCP7 then i guess you would want to skip this step.
9. Open up FCP7 and enter your serial number or numbers if its an upgrade, and quit
10. Open the apps store & check Updates, select and install 'Pro Applications Update 2010-02-1.0'
You can of course download this from apple downloads as a .dmg and keep it with your FCS3 install disk images
This also updates FCP7 to 7.0.3 which is as modern as it gets.
10. Create a new folder in your applications Folder - call it something like 'FCS3'
11. Open the temporary 'FCSX' folder and move Motion 5.1, Compressor 4.1.1 and Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 back into the top level of the Applications Folder directory. delete the temporary folder.
12. your good to go, this all takes me 5mins or less, i regularly do clean installs to keep things running well with FCP7
Now I've not done a full FCPS3 install on Mavericks as just don't use the other app or extra content anymore but i regularly installed them on Mountain Lion last year without issue.
if i get time later ill try a full install and also try out Final Cut Studio 2 as i still have disk images
Graeme
Hey Graeme,
Thanks I have taken note and stored it away.

Graeme!
I just purchased a Mac Mini with 10.9.3. I'm trying to migrate FCP 7 from my MAC Pro Snow Leopard. I'm going to try and follow your instructions here. Thanks a lot for explaining.
One thing: How do I make a DISK IMAGE of just FCP 7 in Snow Leopard?
Thanks!
Jake
Hi All
just tried my other disk images.
These installers ran ok under Mavericks for:
Final Cut Express 4 (not sure why i even have a copy of this!)
Final Cut Server 1.5
Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP6) failed, (the old PPC installer)- perhaps where this myth? started about FCS3 / FCP7
Although FCP 6 looks like it will install with the Pacifist App, will save that test for a rainy day ;)
Graeme
Hello everyone,
I've read this entire thread (a bit late) and now trying to make sense of my experience :
- MacBook Pro8,3, had a suspected malware issue
- I scrubbed the internal SSD drive and installed Mavericks, and then a host of essential apps.
- I'm in transition as for FCP - learning X, but still editing on 7.0.3.
With this in mind, I paid for X and downloaded it, and then a few hours later put in my install disks for FCP 7. The full install took a few hours, and appeared to be responding normally - I was prompted at intervals to put in the next disk, watched the progress bar, etc. I also found the FCP 7 updates (taking the FCP version to 7.0.3), and have archived this onto a CD.
At the end of this install, and 7.0.3 update, I can find nothing relevant in the Applications folder under Mavericks. I did not attempt to hide X version of FCP before doing the install. Where did all this version 7 software go, and do I have no choice but to start over, this time with a migration strategy?
Confused, Grant.
Hi Grant - thanks for the private message - ill answer here.
If you follow my procedure above - you should be ok.
if your in a rush just install the apps you need e.g. FCP 7 and compressor, thats quick.
a full install from optical drive takes ages as it also installs all that extra Motion and Soundtrack Pro content.
your attempt didn't work as you did not 'hide' FCP X in another folder while you installed.
hope that helps - good luck
Graeme
